What are the symptoms of acne?

Most common acne includes breakouts on the skin in the form of whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, or inflamed lesions comprising nodules and even cysts. You may notice that when you’re suffering from acne, you experience an increased oiliness in your skin. In addition, the area around spots and breakouts may be characterised by a change in skin colour, looking red and inflamed. This can take the form of pustules and raised spots. If not dealt with this can lead to scarring.

What causes acne-prone skin?

Acne can have a huge negative impact on us, developing at different times and different ages from teenage years to adulthood. Acne is caused by a combination of various factors that impact the hair follicles in the skin which in turn block the pores. Key contributors to this acne-inducing process are:

Sebaceous glands

These are attached to the hair follicles and produce the oily substance called sebum which keeps the skin lubricated. These glands can be altered by hormonal changes in puberty or menopause and end up overproducing sebum which can lead to clogged pores and then spots.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal changes can also have an influence on acne breakouts. During puberty, our androgen level increases, stimulating the sebaceous gland to produce more oil. Menstruation, menopause, and certain medications can also result in hormonal fluctuations which might increase acne breakouts.

Skin cells

Skin cells naturally shed into order to make way for new cells. If you suffer from acne-prone skin, your skin shedding might be on go-slow, meaning that dead skin cells build up and increase pore blockages in addition to the oily sebum.

Skin bacteria

Skin bacteria is natural and lives on the surface of our skin. Unfortunately, any clogged pores and blockages in the hair follicles increases irritation and inflammation which is the perfect environment for bacteria to multiply. The presence of bacteria makes breakouts worse although it must be said that over washing your skin is not the answer. This can make it worse, so please make sure you seek personal advice on your skin type with a free consultation.

Understanding your acne-prone skin type

The key to establishing the right skin care routine for acne-prone skin is understanding which of the three main types of acne-prone skin you have. Once you’ve identified your own skin type you can start creating a personalised regime that tackles the cause of your acne, not just the symptoms.

The different types of skin types include:

  • Oily skin: Prone to shiny appearance, enlarged pores, and frequent breakouts
  • Combination Skin: Oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and dry elsewhere.
  • Dry/ Sensitive Skin: Dry, flaky, occasional breakouts

Treatments for acne-prone skin

Once you’ve consulted our skin type guide above and established your own skin care routine you might like to consider treatments to tackle acne-prone skin. DermaQuest has specific treatments that are designed to target acne, reduce breakouts, and improve skin clarity taking you towards an unblemished complexion.

The DermaQuest treatments for acne at The Salon at Maxy Farm begin with a gentle, fresh facial undermining acne-causing bacteria and treating blackheads and progress through to a clearing treatment to unblock pores and soothe irritated and inflamed complexions. DermaQuest goes right up to salicylic acid resurfacing and chemical peels to take your anti-acne ambitions to the next level with deep exfoliation for stubborn acne.

Our Lira Skin Care experiences also offer specific treatments for acne-prone skin including the Acne Essential Facial which targets the root causes of acne to brighten, purify and combat the unwanted side effects of acne, leaving your skin clearer and more radiant.
